Every case is a fictional composite constructed for education. Real venues, competition types and common sporting demands provide context, but no case should be attributed to a named athlete, team or incident.

The information is deliberately incomplete. Students should resist “diagnosing” the athlete from a paragraph and identify what must be assessed before recommending an intervention.

PLAUSIBLE FORMULATION

  • General confidence may coexist with weak task-specific evidence for the final phase.
  • Avoidance may protect confidence temporarily while preventing accurate learning.
  • A psychological explanation should not be accepted before pacing, health and training variables are checked.

  1. Review split data and video with the coach and athlete.

  • The phrase may increase threat monitoring and conscious control rather than provide useful instruction.
  • The bench check suggests that social evaluation may be part of the performance problem.
  • The function of self-talk must be established with the athlete rather than inferred from wording alone.

  • The imagery is vivid but insufficiently representative of competitive demands.
  • Rehearsing only ideal outcomes may strengthen confidence while leaving decision-making underprepared.
  • Imagery quality should be judged by functional equivalence, not positivity alone.

  • A distant, partly uncontrollable outcome has not been translated into daily behaviour.
  • Variable effort may reflect motivation quality, unclear role expectations or broader constraints—not simply poor attitude.
  • Selection remains meaningful but should not be the sole indicator of progress.

  • The sensations are not inherently harmful; their meaning may increase perceived threat.
  • Extra warm-up may provide control or may disrupt pacing and increase fatigue.
  • The intervention should be individualised using the swimmer’s previous effective states.

PLAUSIBLE FORMULATION

  • The performance error follows delayed attentional return, but one sequence cannot establish a stable concentration problem.
  • The disputed call may require brief action, followed by an explicit end point.
  • The refocusing routine must fit the short time between rallies.

EVIDENCE-INFORMED RESPONSE

  1. Use a physical release, one exhale and the cue “next ball.”
  2. Reorient to server, formation and seam responsibility.

  • The model is a formulation aid, not a diagnosis or literal account of separate brain structures.

Educational formulation is not clinical assessment.

Persistent distress, impaired daily functioning, risk of harm, disordered eating, substance-related concerns, trauma-related symptoms or other mental-health indicators require appropriate safeguarding and referral. Sport psychology teaching cases should never be used to practise beyond one’s competence.
